Spider veins are typically harmless, but if you don’t like the way they look, The Art of Skin Dermatology offers a medical skincare treatment called sclerotherapy. This proven procedure has been in use since the 1930s and takes about 15 to 45 minutes. You can return to work and most activities the very next day.
- A salt solution is injected directly into the vein
- A compression sock is placed on the leg
- The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to collapse and stick together. Over time (14 weeks), the vessel turns into scar tissue that fades from view

Spider Veins and Varicose Veins
Spider veins and varicose veins are two types of blood vessel issues that affect our patients in Poughkeepsie, Fishkill and New Milford areas. While they may seem similar, there are distinct differences between the two conditions.
Spider veins are small and often appear in clusters or branches. They can be red, dark purple, or blue in color. On the other hand, varicose veins are larger and can be blue, red, or even flesh-colored. They are raised and often have a bulging and twisted appearance.
Varicose veins are commonly found on the legs and are more likely to cause discomfort compared to spider veins. Additionally, varicose veins can lead to more serious health problems such as skin ulcers, bleeding, or blood clots.
To address spider veins close to the skin’s surface, we offer a safe and effective treatment called sclerotherapy. This minimally invasive procedure involves injecting a solution that damages the cells lining the inside of the blood vessels. As a result, the targeted veins collapse and are replaced by healthy tissue. Sclerotherapy is best suited for smaller spider and reticular veins, but can also be used for smaller varicose veins. Compression stockings or support hose are recommended for the first two days after the procedure, and during the day for the following two weeks. Some patients may require additional treatment sessions.
Laser Vein Removal
For spider veins and smaller veins on the face, we also offer laser vein removal using the Candela Gentle Max Pro Yag Laser. This medical laser is effective in treating small to medium-sized veins. Safety precautions are taken to protect the eyes during facial spider vein treatment. For larger varicose veins, we can refer patients to a specialist who performs endovenous laser treatment (EVLT). This breakthrough procedure involves threading a laser fiber through a thin tube and into the vein, replacing the need for more complicated and painful vein stripping treatments.
